CATERPILLAR

my work at caterpillar

In this role I was employed by Perficient Inc., a digital agency and working as a Sr. UI/UX Design consultant for client Caterpillar. At the time I started I was traveling to the client site which was headquartered in Peoria IL. I’d spend the week Mon - Thurs on site then work remotely on Fri. Initially I spent 3 months at the client site, learning the business, building the a relationship with the client and understanding their needs. I was working in a staff augmentation capacity progressively enhancing their main e-commerce property parts.cat.com which does 2+ billion dollars in sales annually.

After three months of doing great work and building trust, the client decided we needed additional staff to handle the amount of work requests. The ask from the client was “we need two more people just like Keith”. I was tasked with finding, interviewing and vetting additional resources to hire bring onto the account. I onboarded, trained and mentored UX staff on the clients ways of working and business understanding.

I lead team initiatives which included product research and competitive analysis and helped transition Caterpillar to using design tools like sketch and figma. We defined design systems which created efficiencies and allowed us to have more velocity, throughput and visual consistency as a design team. We also evolved the UI of the design system which elevated the overall customer experience. Additionally we put a greater emphasis on mobile first and responsive design and maintained / documented brand standards.

Some of what I worked on: new product detail page, a new check out UI and flow, machine / product equipment fitment information and ground engaging tools / motorgrader tools wizard. I also had an opportunity to work on an e-commerce site for a Chinese only audience which was a Chinese first UI/UX experience.

Below are some of the designs and deliverables produced during my time working for Caterpillar.
